Do you find yourself disquieted? Has the troubles in the past come to disturb your present? Does it cause you to doubt what God is doing right now in your marriage? In your home? Do you find yourself worrying over the “what if’s”? Does today feel clouded from what casts down your spirit?
I understand what that feels like, believe me. But, there’s a peace in knowing that the great psalmist questioned his own anxiety from time to time. He acknowledged that it wasn’t always perfectly well with his soul. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me?” Sometimes, we need to take a moment and admit to ourselves and to the Lord… WE ARE NOT OKAY.
But he didn’t stop there and wallow in that place of depression. This is the part that really encouraged me a few mornings ago!!! He got himself back to where he needs to be in a spiritual sense. He says, “Hope thou in God; For I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
We have to get back to the HOPE that we have in Christ, not of ourselves. Holding onto the hopes we have for what He has in store for us in the future, regardless of how we FEEL today.
Don’t forget though, that part about PRAISE. Wow. I cannot testify enough of the power in praise. Especially the praise you give God when your life isn’t all you want it to be. God inhabits the praises of His children. He wants us sing when our hearts are heavy. It means even more to Him to see us trust and rely on Him in the night seasons. That’s a sacrifice of praise to the Lord, in a way. It’s giving a praise to God from a place of neediness and lack. Praise Him for what He will do, if you can’t praise Him for where you are at right now.
The result? Look at the end of the verse, “…who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” He will heal your countenance. Your emotional state. Your disquieted spirit. Your anxiety. He will take that and remind you Who He is!
I encourage you to read all of Psalm 42 today if you find yourself feeling “off” and disquieted. You aren’t messed up for feeling that way. In fact, you’ll find yourself in good company and with a solid example of how to move past those feelings.
